web-search-lite

Free, no-API-key web search for the DeepSeek Harness: your own SearXNG instance (or none at all), with DuckDuckGo Lite, Bing RSS and Wikipedia as keyless fallbacks. Plugs into the harness's ctx.web seam, so the standard web_search tool keeps working — no credentials, no API keys, no configuration required to start.

  • SearXNG (primary) — your own instance, HTML parsed directly
  • DuckDuckGo Lite / Bing RSS / Wikipedia (fallbacks) — used automatically when no SearXNG URL is set or the instance is unreachable

Install on another machine

Prerequisites

npm i -g pnpm # required by dsh plugin management
git --version # required for the git install; install git if missing

(dsh itself: npm i -g @deepseek-ai/dsh, or use npx @deepseek-ai/dsh — the rest is identical.)

1. Install the plugin

dsh plugin --profile web add git+https://git.olac.eu/olac/web-search-lite.git
  • The repo is public → no credentials needed.
  • The package ships no build scripts → no pnpm allowBuilds configuration needed.
  • A peer-dependencies warning is normal and harmless (dsh resolves those packages through its own module fallback).

2. Restart the web server

dsh web # or restart however you run the GUI (Ctrl+C + re-run)

3. Verify it's active

dsh --profile web --dump-config | grep -A3 web-search-lite

You should see the plugin row and searchProvider: web-search-lite on the web row — the model-facing web_search tool is now served by this provider.

4. Configure the SearXNG URL (optional)

  • No SearXNG instance? Leave baseUrl empty → the chain starts at DuckDuckGo Lite, then Bing RSS, then Wikipedia.
  • Set your instance URL by editing ~/.dsh/profiles/web/cordis.patch.yml:
- id: web-search-lite
  config:
    baseUrl: 'https://your-searxng.example'

5. Update after new commits

dsh plugin --profile web update web-search-lite

6. Revert / remove

dsh plugin --profile web remove web-search-lite

Troubleshooting

  • pnpm not found on PATH → npm i -g pnpm, then reopen the shell.
  • Install succeeds but searches still use the old provider → restart dsh web (the plugin tree composes at boot).
  • The Settings → Plugins card doesn't render on a stock install → the web shell serves a prebuilt client manifest; the server half works regardless (see DOCS.md — Settings UI).
